On-site surveys: Geophysical surveys (w/c 8 September)

We are currently carrying out geophysical surveys to help us identify potential buried archaeological features within the South Brooks site.

Over the coming weeks, you may see surveyors walking around the site carrying survey equipment or driving a small quad bike with survey equipment attached to the back. The surveys will be carried out by suitably qualified archaeologists, using equipment designed to have little to no impact on farmed land.

This survey can identify features such as soil filled ditches or pits which may be indicative of former human activity. The technique can also identify the remains of burned features such as hearths, pottery, brick kilns or any burned feature.

The findings of these surveys will help to inform the design of South Brooks, ensuring that we are sensitive to any buried archaeology within the site.

Geophysical surveys are one of the surveys you will see us carrying out to better understand heritage assets within the site. Next year, we will also carry out archaeological trial trenching in limited parts of the site.
